“The profitability of Croesus Company recently restored to private ownership, is a clear indication that business fare better under private ownership than under public ownership.”
In the argument, the author concludes that private ownership can improve the profitability of Croesus Company than public ownership. At first glance, the analysis appears thorough and compelling. However, merely based on profitability, the conclusion fails to provide sufficient information regarding business fare. This argument is unconvincing for several reasons.
In the first place, profitability comes from many factors, not just private ownership or public ownership. If the finance condition is good, mostly company will make money. And some uncertain factors, such as company workers relationship with managers, may determine the profitability. Therefore the assumption can not be founded.
In the second place, the conclusion depends on an assumption that Croesus Company make more money than before just because change the ownership. Without a doubt, the profitability of Croesus Company has raised, however, other company would not make more money than before and even may bankrupt by change ownership. In fact, in face of such limited evidence, it is fallacious to draw any conclusion at all.
In the third place, the arguer false to establish a causal relationship between profitability and ownership. However, common sense informs that public ownership can make money as well as private company, there is fails to causal relationship. So, the assumption is unfounded.
In conclusion, the arguer fails to substantiate his claim that private ownership can improve the profitability of Croesus Company than public ownership. Because the evidence cited in the analysis is too weak to lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To strengthen the argument, the arguer must convince us that other important thing. In addition, the arguer could have to provide more precise information to support his claim.
