答案C，我选E。
对于E，大全简注说had been时态错，可是既然是发生在eighteenth century的事，肯定比25 years ago要早，25 years ago时的事情都已经用了过去时did not realize，那18世纪不应该是had been吗？

过去完成不能乱用,因为不仅强调在过去之前发生,而且也暗示着结束了.
也就是说现在,leaching已经不是矿物分离的方式了...

从题干来看没有什么地方表明这个method已经不在使用了。个人感觉过去完成式在很多时候都是错误的标志。。。

我不理解的是后面的as early as....前后怎么也得有个对比对象吧。。。可prep说不是表示对比。。。而是规定时间范围的固定用法。。。。很郁闷

完成时不一定需要明确的时间状语：iPhone is so successful in the market. Some alien creature must have design it.
但是过去完成时则不一样，过去完成时必须需要明确的时间点，而且这个时间点必须是个完成时的那个动作有着必然的逻辑关系才行

as early as确实可以不算做比较。如果一定要说是as as比较的话，那么as as的比较必须要平行，所以前面必须要the time（date） of（when）……is as early as ……不过我觉得这个情况应该看作是习惯用法，不然英语就成法语了。。。
