这个句子中的than 后面为什么要有个is `不是很多余吗？直接 owing a car 和 taking the bus 比较呀····

I think another form of the sentence could be:

It is much less economic and convenient to own a car than it is to take the bus or the subway.

Than put "owning a car at the beginning of the sentence as a subject", the sentence turns out to be

Owning a car is much less economic and convenient that it is taking the bus or the subway. (the second "it" can be omitted here)
