I appreciate for your kindly reply. Could you please explain the following sentence a little more? "Accounting PhD, if you do empirical stuff especially in valuation, it's quite easy, but most people choose to stay in academia because it is not worth the price. " I will focus on Empirical Financial Accounting in the coming PhD program. And one of my research interests is about accounting based valuation (but the program may not offer valuation courses for PhD students). Do you think it is quite easy to get a position in industry or in school for my case? A report showed that the supply of financial accounting PhD will meet 91% of demand in 2007. I am not sure whether my niche will become too narrow to get a job when I graduate.
Take it easy. Even for finance PhDs, it is not easy to get into industry now. I know somebody who says that a lot of science industry positions now require a couple of years of postdoc experience and that is my prediction for finance PhDs a couple of years down the future (very likely for Chinese PhDs, for Americans I think it is still fairly easy) . "那些大牛拿着几十万薪水", that's for superb person, and in accounting they can do the same, e.g., Charles Lee, Scott Richardson, Richard Sloan, etc. Smart persons are paid handsomely regardless of their field. Accounting PhD, if you do empirical stuff especially in valuation, it's quite easy, but most people choose to stay in academia because it is not worth the price.
-- by 会员 alashanghai (2011/2/28 2:31:57)
