"Like" -> there must be comparison in the sentence.
The sentence is comparing (grassy fields and old pastures) AND sandpiper, both are vanishing as described by the sentence. Therefore, the second sentence must starts with either "the bird" or "sandpiper", any others are incorrect. Only B is valid.

In A, "the sandpipers vanishing in the northeastern United States" becomes the comparing subject, which is incorrect.
