我觉得主要是因为ACDE都很不对，比B用了过去完成时更加不对。所以选择B这个相对好的答案。。。其实我也不是很懂。。。

我讲一讲我对正确答案的理解
这里superiority用过去完成时态had been 是为了表达prove这个动作的先时性（anteriority）用来说明motor car相比horse的优越性在已经被证明了是在它的usefulness被demonstrate之前就已经被证明了的
画一个时间轴就能明白
过去完成时是表达比一般过去时更远的过去而且先发生的动作往往会对后发生的动作产生影响

这样一来把两个动作（prove和demonstrate）所发生的先后顺序排列好这个句子利用时态表达的意义就很明显了：motor car先是证明了它比马更优越后来又展现出了它的经济实用性所以人们对它的敌意消失了是一个渐进的过程
选B不是因为它是相对较好的答案而是因为它利用精确的时态对比表达了单纯用词和句没有表达出的附加意义这就是时态在表义中的作用

ps 我是研究法语的所以思路借鉴了法语当中的分析手法法语的时态是非常复杂但是准确的所以这样的解释方式我相信是具有说服力的

大全里的参考答案是C也～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～我觉得对于一个AND连接的结构，C明显比B好得多了～
