I just did some research on google and called my friend(a Canadian) who majored in English.

A variety of choices ARE available.
A group of students ARE here.
The group of students IS HERE.
The majority of people VOTE for him.

The reason is that

the idiom "a variety of choices" stresses choices. so the sentences can be rewritten to "choices are available". But if you strip the sentence to its core with variety, it becomes "a variety is available", which does not make too much sense at all.
