Hi all,Can you help me with this question?

A recent national study of the public schools shows that there are now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many than there were four years ago.

The correct answer is: there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were

I am confused about the "were" in the answer. I think it should be "was".

Please help!
