答案是E。
我对baby姐的解释提出如下意见：
我支持prep语法笔记里面的讲法，V-ing的句子可以表示伴随、因果等等多种可能。所以earning在这里也是可行的，可以改写为：
By 1940, the pilot Jacqueline Cochran held seventeen official national and international speed records, earning them at a time when aviation was still so new that many of the planes she flew were of dangerously experimental design.
但是这个修改在选项里没有，所以只有一个答案E。
正如Ron也说:
"使用comma+ing的条件，即
1) it should apply most nearly to the subject of the preceding clause (as you've said);and, even more importantly,
2) it should have one of the following RELATIONSHIPS to that clause:
* immediate consequence
* simultaneous, but lower-priority, action"
在上述题目中，如果用earning我觉得确实表伴随，表示通过某种方式／手段，或者表示其他伴随同时发生，也显示这句话只是伴随而不是作者所主要表达的意思（因为未划线题干出现了完整主句SVO）。而baby姐的如下举例可能会混淆了理解。
”我觉得”表伴随”是很多中国人的叫法，可能受某培训机构的影响。我从没听美国人说v-ing是表伴随的，所以不认同这个。
就我给的这个例子来说，do all the prep questions和read OG压根就是两件独立的事（OG和Prep各是各的），这两件事是并列关系，可以同时发生，但不是咱说的“表伴随”。如果你要说你干了这两件事，就该用"and"表并列。Dickinson's letter那道题，(A)选项的"outnumbering ..."之所以不对，就是因为前后说了独立的两件事（前面说写于什么时间段，后面说数量超过什么什么），就好比前面说OG后面说prep。
"He read OG for eight times, hoping for a stellar GMAT score. "
这个句子才是说，"hoping for a stellar GMAT score"对于"read OG for eight times"来说，是个"simultaneous, but lower-priority, action" (by Ron)
说的是他本着什么样的目标刷OG，或者说刷OG的时候有啥想法。
或者这样：
He read OG, practicing over 500 questions. （我们知道OG包括over 500 questions，所以"practicing over 500 questions"是补充说明解释"he read OG"）“
baby姐的论点中，我认为：是否用"and"还是用“, V-ing..."取决与题目中是否提供这个选项 和 是否给出了完整主句SVO。
而Dickinson这题里，在不知道正确答案前，未划线部分没有完整主句。

如果outnumber改成如下V-ing我理解也是可以的： ＊Emily Dickinson's letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson, outnumbering her letter to anyone else, were written over a period beginning a few years before Susan's marriage to Emily's brother and ending shortly before Emily's death in 1886. （write后面太长了）
但是这个修改在选项里没有，所以只有一个答案E。
所以，在第一题OG13-35里面是应该可以用earning的，但是选项中使用earning的地方（B、C）还有使用and的地方（A）却有其他关键错误（即考点）：so...that & at a time when。
