while both contemporary Hispanic authors living abroad  does not including " and "to consist the phrase "both and" ,here both merely modifies contemporary Hispanic authors  who live abroad  ,only two contemporary Hispanic authors who live abroad,that is works of both contemporary Hispanic authors living abroad  and works of those who are living

I can understand the ambiguity once I read the ETS's explanation.

But can "those" refer to "contemporary Hispanic authors"? Then A and B in "both A and B" phrase are parallel and won't cause ambiguity.

我想是不是在使用both..and ..句型时，要求绝对的平行，不可以用代词指代。再加上这里也有可能造成歧义，变成一共只有两个authors，所以不太好。
