代词it使用问题！

白勇《语法全解》里面说it/this/that都是不能用来指代整个句子.

那it 可以用来做形式宾语吗？例如：They kept it quiet that he was dead.

请NN帮忙解答，万分感谢！

Good question, IMO it can.

In generally, GMAT use "it" to deter the infinitive "to" or that clause, for instance,
"It is good to see you."
Otherwise "Too see you is good" awkward.

"It is a secret that he likes tomatoes."
Otherwise "That he likes tomatoes is a secret" awkward.

So back to your question,
"They keep it quiet that he was dead."
Otherwise, "That he was dead was kept secret by them" awkward.

楼上说的太好了，it做形式主语的时候可以指代to do和that从句，BY的概括有点偏颇了，不过实用性非常好，到目前为止我只做到过一道题考点是it指代to do，其他的即使有it指代to do或that也不是划线部分或者不是考点

一直没看到过it指代确实原则，考的题型也少，所以有点模糊！
