啊，错了错了，不好意思看错答案了，是选E。这是一段不选C的解释从别的网站上copy下来的
(c) contains "shots that were sent by swift messenger", illogically implying that the shots themselves were sent by swift messenger.

("news" is singular, surprisingly enough)

我也感觉，虽然我看出来了这里只能是非限定性修饰，排除BC，但是E项里德by swift messenger好像有碍平行，后面可没有重复这个介词结构。

The news were sent by the messanger, not the bullets. Therefore, 'which and that' following 'shots' must be elimanated for incorrect modification.

That leaves D and E.

I assume the underlined portion ends at 'eleven days'. Regardless, E is parallel.
