39.   Scientists have recently discovered what could be the largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles spawned

by a single fertilized spore some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

(A) extending

(B) extends

(C) extended

(D) it extended(A)

(E) is extending

The original sentence is correctly written. The giant fungus is described as an interwoven filigree spawned ... some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than 30 acres.

75.   Salt deposits and moisture threaten to destroy the Mohenjo-Daro excavation in Pakistan, the site of an ancient civilization
that flourished at the same time as the civilizations in the Nile delta and the river valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates.

(A) that flourished at the same time as the civilizations

(B) that had flourished at the same time as had the civilizations

(C) that flourished at the same time those had

(D) flourishing at the same time as those did(A)

(E) flourishing at the same time as those were

答案是A.    D     The plural pronoun those cannot refer to the singular civilization and thus lacks a referent; did is awkward and unnecessary

93.   By a vote of 9 to 0, the Supreme Court awarded the Central Intelligence Agency broad discretionary powers enabling it to withhold from the public the identities of its sources of intelligence information.

(A) enabling it to withhold from the public

(B) for it to withhold from the public

(C) for withholding disclosure to the public of

(D) that enable them to withhold from public disclosure(A)

(E) that they can withhold public disclosure of

In this correct sentence, the underlined phrase clearly modifies powers; it refers to the Central Intelligence Agency. To withhold from the public is concise, idiomatic, and clear.

98.   As rainfall began to decrease in the Southwest about the middle of the twelfth century, most of the Monument Valley Anasazi abandoned their homes to join other clans
whose access to water was less limited.

(A) whose access to water was less limited

(B) where there was access to water that was less limited

(C) where they had less limited water access

(D) with less limitations on water access(A)

(E) having less limitations to water access

E      As a countable quantity, limitations should be modified by fewer, not less, having is ambiguous because it is unclear whether it refers to the Anasazi or other clans

my two cents ,还请大家指教

Nine months after the county banned jet skis and other water bikes from the tranquil waters of Puget Sound, a judge overturned the ban on the ground of violating state laws for allowing the use of personal watercraft on common waterways.

(A) of violating state laws for allowing

(B) of their violating state laws to allow

(C) that it violates state laws that allowed

(D) that it violated state laws allowing

(E) that state laws were being violated allowing

(D) that it violated state laws allowing

指带a judge还是the ban?

不是平衡句, 指代就近的with the consideration of singularity

by the way, I think that "having less..." in #98 illogically modifies "clans"
I think that OG explanation is slightly off.

filigree of mushrooms and rootlike tentacles
spawned ,

仔细看一下,其实spanwaned &extending 都是就近修饰了中心词filgree , tantctlees 不是中心词,所以可以忽视不看,( 顺便说一下,that ,which 是可以修饰非中心词的,A of B that ,that 可以修饰B也可以修饰A 要看逻辑意思,A's B that  that which ,ed ,Vting ,都不能修饰A ,只能修饰 B 这个中心词

First, "on the ground" is a phrase. It means "because". Usually it give out the reason to support one legal action. The common usage is "on the ground that ". Here " on the ground" modify the ban.

Second, As long as a "law", "directive", use "doing". It represents always forbid this action. So only (D) is corret.
