Unlike the virginal, whose single set of strings runs parallel to the front edge of the instrument, the harpsichord`s several sets of strings are placed at right angles to its front edge.
A  whose single set of strings runs parallel to the front edge of the instrument, the harpsichord`s several sets of strings are
B  with a single set of strings running parallel to the front edge of the instrument, the several sets of strings of the harpsichord are
C  which has a single set of strings that runs parallel to the front edge of the instrument, in the case of the harpsichord, several sets of strings are
D  which has a single set of strings that run parallel to the front edge of the instrument, the harpsichord has several sets of strings
E  in which a single set of strings run parallel to the front edge of the instrument, the harpsichord`s several sets of strings are

这题答案选D。想讨论的是为什么“a set of strings” 后面不用动词单数形式 “runs”?

不算一组词么?类似a group of students,会说后面动词只修饰students?

当然是noun phrase,但是这里modifier要根据意思来找对应的词我们会说a group of students who are from US,而不是a group of students who is from US

引一个GMAT Club moderator的回答:A set running parallel to the front edge does not convey the proper meaning since in both cases, it is the strings (plural) that run either along the front edge or perpendicular to the edge. Hence, ' strings that run' is the correct diction

有意思的是刚看到另一题OG739:“In some types of pine trees, a thick layer of needles protects the buds....”.

这里protect又用的单数,也可以说是needles protect而不是layer哈哈

这道题有点印象,之前看Beat the GMAT论坛有曼哈顿的老师回答,算是草草带过…

C) a thick layer of needles protect the buds from which new growth proceeds; thus, they are able to withstand relatively well any forest fires
- the correct verb is "a thick layer [of needles] protects..."

原帖:https://www.beatthegmat.com/og-17-t293414.html

所以试着从句意出发,正确选项:a thick layer of needles protects the buds from which new growth proceeds
(bud根据Cambridge Dictionary意思是a small part of a plant, that develops into a flower or leaf,也就是花蕾)
个人觉得起到保护作用的是layer而不是needles,所以A正确

我觉得这里一个noun phrase + verb的考点跟 <“noun phrase +comma which"里面which修饰哪个词>这个考点有异曲同工的感觉,举个Ron提过的例子:

摘自Ron的视频20110331"Which" Modifier, Ambiguous Pronouns

The basic rule of WHICH modifier: ---- they modify the noun that precedes the comma. More accurately: ---- a "which" can modify: (1) the noun that immediately precedes the comma or (2) the noun + preposition phrase that immediately precedes the comma

e.g. The old capital building in Benicia, which was the capital city of California for a few years in the 19th century, is a historic landmark.

e.g. The old capital building in Benicia, which was built in under a year when the city was designated capital of California, is now a historical landmark.
这两句都是对的,第一个which修饰Benicia,第二修饰capital building,所以which不是绝对的就近原则, i.e. they can also modify slightly far away noun when this noun is the need of the noun phrase and when such modification makes sense.

和楼主提的这个类似,都是根据意思才能判断which修饰哪个noun
