I've read a lot of blogs praising the riseof China as well as much news boosting the China Era. But I have my concerns.
China has a long way to go. Just take a look at Qing dynasty that had thelargest gross production at that time. Similarly, we are not so powerful asmany imagine.
How many ideas are originated in China? How many core technologies do wedevelop? How many competitive Chinese companies are there in the world?
Good figures does not necessarily mean we are Japan or US, but prove the benefitsof cheap labor, large amount of investigation and the strength of centralizedeconomy. The launch of manned satellite, advanced submarine and the exceedingperformance in Olympic Games just serve as the media weapons of the communityparty and just indicate a huge population in the country and a pattern ofcentralized resources controlled by the government.
Now, in the next five-year plan, we "plan" to slow down our economicgrowth rate. But, from another perspective, we have to do so, since Chinese seniorofficers understand well that without a significant change, China can nevermaintain a fast development pace in the long term.
Can we complete the transition smoothly and successfully? Hard to say, as we'vegot so many problems at hand. We have severe corruption issues here, ratherthan a transparent and democratic political system; we do not have a faircompetition environment, but unstable markets relying on implicit rules; peopledo not have faith, we are just too eager for money to make a contribution inother fails, such as science and cultures; we do not have rich naturalresources, but severe environment problems...
China does have a lot of talents, many good traditions, a wide range ofterritory and thus a huge potential for a leading position in the planet. However, before reaching the goal, we have a lot of work. The task withthe first priority is to reform the country's high-level architecture, asPremier Wen said. Unless we have a sound environment as other countries, likeUS or develop a unique, successful and sustainable political system on our own,I do not believe that we can reach far enough.
Expecting to see the progression in China. But, more importantly, let's do something to speed it up. |
