OK.......seeing no one wants to take care of this question, let me do it.
I have been "actively" managing the LoR for both recommenders. Leave nothing to chance! Even though that means sometimes you give them the impression of being paranoid. And that is OK! ---- because I really don't want to bug them next year this time. So let's get the fuss over with.
My two recommenders, one American, one British, both insist writing their own versions. I did provide my examples and my attributes to them in a nicely written format. But I do give them the freedom to modify everything they want to. Trust is the thing I have to have. I realized there is no absolute control in this deal, unless I can control adcomm's decisions at the end.
It is strongly suggested applicants not write their own letters because adcomm will smell your styles out! And that is the least thing you want to see happening.....
So in short, do you have to bug your recommenders with 10+ schools if that's what you are doing? yes! Do you write the letters in your own words, no! Do you provide examples for the questions and walk them through? yes! Do you trust them? you have to.
What else can we do? -- treat them with nice dinner. and play the card of sincerity and honesty. Tell them how much you want the school offers. And move their hearts.
And then you leave the rest with them....and God. |
