答案是D。对C的解释是“to be an expatriate was fashionable ” awkward
实在无法理解，在C里用before引导一个时间状语从句，哪里awkward了？
为什么D的用形式主语前置时间状语就比C的时间状语从句好？

C中to be an expatriate引起歧义，指代不明确：可以是Josephinie Baker也可以使Paris，所以一定错。
相比之下由主语应该是Josephin Baker派出了ABE选项，所以就选了D。

Gmat考试选的是最好的选项，不是最正确了！

代词指代不明知道的，为什么这里to be也有指代不明？

本来我也是那么理解的，可以指JB，也可以Paris，但是后来怎么看怎么不对劲

to be an expatriate was fashionable 是一个完整的系表结构的句子，不定时做主语，然后由before引导，变成时间状语从句

这样理解就是很简单的句子，to be。。。做状语，没有指代的问题啊。。。
