答案是E，我选了B。。B错在哪了呢？

B的时态不对，既然99% vanished了，那么还有1%是alive的，那么对于这么多群种的整体说 appeared 就不太妥当。

仔细体会一下B和原句的意思，会发现稍有不同的，而且B中的that指代的东西太长，导致有些头重脚轻。
