187是..as many as.. 比较,199是..greater than ..比较,后者好像不曾见greater than .. as,  即使有见..greater than those...用法,在199题中也不能用这类代词指代,因为"东西方发生的地震是不同的两次地震",用了代词就有歧异东方的地震又跑到西方害人了!  大家讨论,共同学习!

我觉得187确实会让人感觉American指同一批人. 但是这题主要考点是as...as, 也没有更好的选择. 关于as做代词, 我一直不太能接受, 我觉得应该是省略. (many Americans were killed as (Americans) would later)

我觉得199用a quake更清晰.

因为187里面的 Americans没有任何修饰语限定语，是一个广泛的概念，所以省略的话不至于误解为Civil War 和D-Day 里阵亡的是同一批人，除非用they来指代。four times as many Americans were killed as（they） would later be killed.这样才会产生楼主所认为的误解。一个更简单的例子：In general, people are better educated than (people were) twenty years ago.

而199里面的quake，因为有介词短语来限定修饰，所以用it指代的时候，逻辑意思有误。因为it/they指代的前面名词词组本身，包括修饰语；而that/those指代的是前面名词词组的中心词，不包括修饰语。

事实上这2道题也是SC中2个很典型的考点：比较对象（指代）问题和比较中的省略问题
187：比较中的省略：当比较的2部分有完全相同的成分（如比较对象相同等）（仅仅是形式上完全相同，不必追究是否同一批或者完全一样的动作内涵，如187中americans），且省略后不至于引起歧义的时候，应该尽量省略。

1、比较对象（主语）相同省略，见187。当然也有人认为此时as/than也作代词用，但我同lilyzy一样，更愿意认为是省略。

比较对象（指代）问题（此时比较对象多为比较复杂的带修饰语的名词词组），这种错误往往用2中方法来改正：用that/those指代前面的中心词a quake或者用199中的办法--用同样的中心词（a quake）+限定修饰语来表达；直接用it/they指代是很典型的错误。

在more...than结构中，对于than后的比较对象的指代你说用 it 和 they指代是典型错误可是198题中，og 的解释中就说如果than后面改成it had had 就是对的，那这里不就是 用it而不是that指代了前面的army了?

198中就是比的同一个army啊，只不过是同一个army的不同战役罢了，所以用it没错。

199中area和100 times倍数的位置关系应该是谁先谁后啊？

BC:100 times (greater) the area... than

我觉得都一样，对嘛？
