这题选B,估计大家都同意。但时偶还是觉得B读起来怪怪的，理由如下(1)all 后面是否省略population? (2)wholly dependent on rice as its staple food-->这句怎么读起来感觉好奇怪？

(1)你可以这样理解。但非本题关键。

(2)你觉得怎么奇怪呢？不奇怪呀。习惯用法。

比较出结果嘛。depend on sth to be 没有这种用法。

这道题ETS出的很好，我们可以分析一下它出题的思路。

首先，ABCDE 5个开头，全是正确的，千万别浪费时间分析到底哪个更正确。

然后看第二个分句开头，谓语必须是助动词+形容词，CD不完整，排除。

最后看ABE的末尾其他部分，发现都一样除了2个to be，1个as。因为只能有一个正确答案，只能选As那个，就是B

不需要什么更复杂的语法知识，也能做对题。

不同意5楼说的开头全对的说法。这里的分词结构要比which clause要好。因为Which 修饰和它相连的先行词- World’s population，而在意义上应该表示one-half of the world’s population, 所以只能要分词，分词可以修饰前面的分句。

至于AS, 没有dependent on to be 的这种用法。此外，Dependent on … as , 在这里，就类似于serve.. as, think of… as. 一样的用法。AS解释为“作为“，比to be “要成为”好。
