表示某物的数量应该是the number of sth.啊， GWD-11的一道语法题是salmon's numbers，之前在OG上貌似也遇见过类似的情况，不急的原题了，请大牛们指教！！谢谢

In Scotland, the number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting, by pollution, and by various other threats to the fish’s habitat.

A.number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting

B.number of wild salmon is reduced because deep-sea and coastal netting is not controlled

C.numbers of wild salmon has been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting

D.wild salmon’s numbers are reduced by deep-sea and coastal netting that is not controlled

E.wild salmon’s numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting.

答案是E，为什么不是B呢？

B选项无法是的and平行~

关于这里的numbers，我认为在指代动物数量的时候可以复数，表示不同主群的个体数目。

之前看过讨论贴，貌似还有一个看法就是，numbers很少用复数。

(It needs to be has to agree with the number of and later part is not parallel.)

B. number of wild salmon is reduced because deep-sea and coastal netting is not controlled
(Introduction of subordinate clause using because destroys parallelism.)

C. numbers of wild salmon has been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting
(the numbers of is not correct, it needs to the number of and because of destroys parallelism.)

D. wild salmon’s numbers are reduced by deep-sea and coastal netting that is not controlled
(Not parallel. It gives the impression that coastal netting is not controlled by pollution, and by various other threats rather than salmon.)

E. wild salmon’s numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting

There are two things, we need to fix.

First: SV agreement:

A number of -> plural

The number of  -> singular

Second: Parallelism: because remaining text is having structure...by pollution, and by various other threats to the fish’s habitat. " uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting" must also have by before it. Hence it must be "by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting"

A. number of wild salmon have been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting-----> SV is wrong, parallelism is not there.
B. number of wild salmon is reduced because deep-sea and coastal netting is not controlled  ----> Here SV is okay, parallelism is not there.
C. numbers of wild salmon has been reduced because of uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting  ---> wrong usage of numbers, parallelism is not there.
D. wild salmon’s numbers are reduced by deep-sea and coastal netting that is not controlled ---> SV is okay, "deep-sea and coastal netting that is not controlled" is unnecessarily verbose and modifies only netting. Also "that" modifier is also not parallel in remaining part of the sentence.
E. wild salmon’s numbers have been reduced by uncontrolled deep-sea and coastal netting --- SV is okay and perfectly parallel.
