求教：胡敏Toefl高分作文两句话的翻译和语法问题

请教各位大牛有关胡敏Toefl高分作文中的两句话：

第一句：TWE Essay Topic 7 (page 55  第二段第二行）---I found the statement of studying solely for a degree to be too narrow. Certainly, I would not go anywhere near so far as to say that the power and money which the degree ultimately confers are not part of the real world. But the problem I have with the above statement is that....

不太明白这句话的逻辑意思，the power and money 当然应当是 part of the real world 阿。。。恳请各位指点这段话的意思，实在看不太明白

第二句：TWE Essay Topic 5 (page 49  第一段第三行）--- Scientists claim that with lions, for example, play fighting prepares the cubs for their future life as a hunter and killer.

这句主要是语法问题。play fighting 这里应当是动词短语吧？ 是否应当是playing fighting prepares....？ play如果在这里做名词是不是有点奇怪？

胡敏这本书我看了8篇左右，总体感觉其用词和句式比较好，但论证理由不是很容易想到，论证结构也不太遵循传统的议论文论证结构（即一般所认为的 首段+主论+次论+ 让步论+末段 的经典结构）。我的疑问是：

1）是否这本书的写法并不太合乎常规，或者说，绝大部分人（包括满分作文得主）不会按照其论证方法进行写作？

2）听说这本书目前最新版本是2005年版，不知道05版本和00版本相比有什么变化没有？从引用文章的质量来看是否有明显差别？

3）因为本人之前未系统学习过托福作文写作（功底也不太好），不知道大家对于用好这本书有什么建议？我目前准备先浏览一遍，背诵大部分好的句子和论证段落，不知道这阶段背诵的东西在后阶段的系统写作中能否得到利用。
