A until almost 1900, scholars and critics did not begin seriously to study

D it was not almost until 1900 when scholars and critics began to seriously study
E it was not until almost 1900 that scholars and critics seriously began studying（E)
为什么说D中"not almost until"是无意义的修饰语。 E选项中用began studying, 为什么不用begin to do?

原文almost 1900意思应该是将近1900

而almost until修饰的是until "将近直到" 似乎不是很通顺

个人意见看能不能帮到LZ

恩，明白了，有道理，之前没仔细看清题干,看成not until almost，怎么都想不通，谢谢了。
刚看到有个帖子说：
"It is not until ...that..."is idiom that represents a strong feeling of emphasis.In chinese it can be called "Qiang Diao Ju",quite familiar right?
Keep this in mind:When encounter this kind of question,do not seperate "not" and "until" apart.There exists no why but the idiom,the tone of language.

这题很简单啊！

not until固定搭配，UNITL NOT不对，排除A、B

“although+句子，句子”或者“句子，although+句子”，所以C没主语，排除

D里面it is是强调句，强调物用that，强调人用who，哪儿有用when的？排除

这不就剩E了吗?

seriously到底是修饰哪个词的啊？总是搞不懂这种叠用的修饰关系~~请指教，谢谢~~

那为什么是begin doing呢？

一般来说，begin to do和begin doing可以互换，但在以下三种情况下，用to do：

1. 主语不是指人，而是it等。如：It began to rain.

2. begin后接表示心理活动的词。如：begin to know
believe， wonder， think等。

3. begin本身是ing形式，为避免重复后接to do
即，beginning to do

补充：不知道不等于没有，高一的时候都讲过好几遍了。做题的时候要么没有这个两个选项同时出现，如果有的话，就是这三种区别
