I don't understand why "an overwhelming proportion of women work" but not works.  For A of B, the verb should be consistent with A rather than B, e.g. an array of xxx is, a collection of xxxx is

a group of后面应该是单数吧？

a number of, a group of, an average of，第一眼看着结构是一样的，但是他们属不同类型， a number of属于大量的，所以复数，但是a group of集合名词（具体叫法我也说不上，但就是表示一组，一个团队等）后面要跟单数动词。此类的还有a team of, a group of, a series of， a portion of, a species of, a chain of 。。。。。

找到了词典里的例句, a proportion of...是一部分的意思,与a number of用法类似,

A large proportion of the children come to school by bus.
