请教 GWD 1－41 有关时态

Q41:

Leaching, the recovery of copper from the drainage water of mines, as a method of the extraction of minerals, it was well established as early as the eighteenth century, but until about 25 years ago miners did not realize that bacteria take an active part in the process.

一开始看到C时，我认为是正确答案。可再看到E后，我又认为E强调了时间的对比，显然这里讲了两个时间，对过去的过去采用had been会更合适。而且，well established修饰前面a method of...的中心词method也说得过去。

可答案为什么是C呢？

虽然E的结构略显复杂，没有C的结构那么紧凑。可是，无论结构多么紧凑，时态总要先保证正确吧！那么，这里为什么用was 而不用 had been呢？

请各位NN指教。

我自己想到的一个解释是，中间用了连词 but，事实上这是两个句子，那么对于第一个句子而言，其时间词只有一个，所以用was。不知这样理解正确否？

1. 时间壮语是 the eighteenth century，就像你理解的那样，用过去时。

2 原文没有动作先后的比较，but 前后说明两个事件的比较，不是说明一动作发生与另一动作之前。

是事件的比较而非动作的比较？past perfect tense只能针对动作的比较啊？！

好像自己以前没有注意到这方面的问题。非常感谢，自己再体会。

E,过去完成时表示动作发生在过去的过去,但是它同时表示动作完成在过去的过去.举个例子:he had done the work at the 6:00.表示动作是在六点做完的;he did the work at 6:00.表示做这个工作是在六点,没有完成的含义(摘自章语法).从这道题来看,这个方法在18世纪就产生了,并且一直有,用完成时明显不符合逻辑,错.

就是它作为一种method虽然发生在did not realize前，但从后面那句看出，到后来这动作到后来仍没结束。按楼上理解的话，就应该是前面的动作完成了然后到第二个动作，那前面的动作才是过去完成。
