According to what I know, there is an agreement among the US univerisities that those who have got offers are allowed to respond as late as April 15 when they have got all their offers and make an informed decision. This practice can prevent that some people may accept many offers and finally go to one school and also assures that students can go to their best choice. Some schools do give an earlier deadline to applicants and they are criticized by their peers; if applicants ask for an extension, they probably will grant. If people accepted many offers and end up needing just one, the rest programs making the offers cannot get in other students that year. No body happy; only the many offer owners feel safe and get their best choice, but if they want to find a job in a unversity after their graduation, they may have trouble. The acadmic world is small and people talk. I was warned so. Don't worry if you have no offer on hand. You are not chosen in the first round but you may be chosen in the second round, especially when you didn't apply to No. 1 school in your area. When they are waiting for better offer, you just wait for your offer. Be prepared even after April 15. Don't give up easily.
