OG11-45 提问

According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy
will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier
in the year and instead come in for a "soft landing," followed by a gradual increase in business activity.

(A)            that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come

(B)           in the economy to avoid the recession, what many feared earlier in the year, rather to come

(C)           in the economy's ability to avoid the recession, something earlier in the year many had feared, and instead to come

(D)           in the economy to avoid the recession many were fearing earlier in the year, and rather to come

(E)            that the economy will avoid the recession that was feared earlier this year by many, with it instead coming

The original sentence successfully avoids the problems that may occur in a long sentence with multiple modifiers. Two subordinate clauses begin with that, and one of them is contained within another. That many had feared earlier in the year clearly defines the recession. That the economy will avoid ... and instead (will understood) come... is the subordinate clause that follows the main clause; its

subject,

economy, is followed by two parallel verbs,

will avoid and (will understood) come. Instead before the second verb properly indicates contrast

解释的部分我还是看不明白, 首先时态为什么要用过去完成时,主句是现在时,而且也没有明显的时间状语表示要用过去完成时啊?

解释中. That the economy will avoid ... and instead (will understood) come... is  这个结构看不懂, instead 在这里时什么作用啊? 括弧中will understand 又是什么?

1.对于过去完成时的用法其实确实牵强,the earlier in the year不能说就是过去完成时的标志,感觉这里用had done确实有值得商榷的地方。这里应该用过去时。无数的例子可以证明这一点:

1.The accident happened earlier in the year when a bridge collapsed during Spring Festival, killing 37 people。这里的happened

2.Commercial banks chose to lend loans earlier in the year than before in a bid to gain profits earlier, resulting in the rapid fulfillment of lending targets in the first quarter, explained the spokesman.这里的chose

3.Design Boom held a competition earlier in the year that aimed to redesign the homeless person's cart. 这里的held

但是OG为什么用过去完成时,只能当作是OG的州官行为了。

2.解释中. That the economy will avoid ... and instead (will understood) come... is  这个结构看不懂, instead 在这里时什么作用啊? 括弧中will understand 又是什么?

这个比较简单,意思就是第二个will可以省略,而且这样的省略是不影响理解的。(will understood)即will这个词省略是可以理解的。instead是转折的作用,前面说是经济会衰退,后面说经济会软着陆,并伴随一定的渐渐的增长。come in for【接受,受到】

好像在一道类似的题目中有人提出实际上是在earlier this year 之前一直fear,所以用过去完成时,这种解释可以帮助记忆,但解释本身有些勉强。或者可以认为表示过去曾经如何如何(比如曾经认为等)的时候可以用过去完成时?

我对选项C地解释中说instead to come does not complete the second part of the sentence idiomatically感觉不太理解,这跟A中的表达几乎一样啊,只是A中用的是动词原型,这里用的是跟ability 配套的不定式罢了,有何实质不同?请NN解惑。

如果instead和前面是平行的话,instead后面应该有动词,用不定式就没有谓语动词,句子不完整~

这个过去分词实在没道理啊. ETS肯定要算错的. 新的东家怎么这样搞.

According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy

(A)            that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come

In my humble opinion, 这个过去分词 is perfectly used in the context.

过去分词 is usually used when there are two actions happening in two different time frames.  In this sentence, the first time frame is now, which is indicated by "the gains in the stock market", another time frame is "earlier in the year". In normal circumstances, a simple past tense should be used. However, since the action of "fear" has already come to an end as soon as  the "gains" appear, so a past perfect tense is appropriately used here.

Hence, A is the correct answer.

不同意楼上的看法….

OG11版第634页对过去完成式解释如下:

Past Perfect:this verb form is used with had to show the order of two events that took place in the past.

所以两个时态应该都是过去式不可能用现在是来比较先后….

勉强解释的话就是fear是一个持续性的动作(in the past),

同学们,看看我找到的例句吧:

例句1:

Many had feared that personal interaction would suffer as computers are becoming the dominant mode of communication, but that fear has not materialized. On the contrary, the ability to instantly reach anyone in the world with a few keystrokes has greatly enhanced our relationships.

例句2:

Lastly, the NZ experience does indicate that farming without price supports is possible, and not as "unhealthy" as many had feared.

好像many had feared是一种固定用法,意思是“许多人曾经担心...”。好像和我们常说的“I had thought/hope/intended/meant that..."的用法差不多。
