好像在一道类似的题目中有人提出实际上是在earlier this year 之前一直fear，所以用过去完成时，这种解释可以帮助记忆，但解释本身有些勉强。或者可以认为表示过去曾经如何如何（比如曾经认为等）的时候可以用过去完成时？

我对选项C地解释中说instead to come does not complete the second part of the sentence idiomatically感觉不太理解，这跟A中的表达几乎一样啊，只是A中用的是动词原型，这里用的是跟ability 配套的不定式罢了，有何实质不同？请NN解惑。

所以两个时态应该都是过去式…不可能用现在是来比较先后….

勉强解释的话就是fear是一个持续性的动作(in the past),
