我想请问下，A为什么不能修饰 scholars，E却是正确答案，另外请教BASED ON的用法，谢谢。。。

我是这么理解的：

based on是根据base sth on转化来的，意思是to use particular information or facts as a point from which to develop an idea,plan etc.题中，画线部分是修饰scholars，但是base scholars on accounts of various ancient writers显然是不合逻辑的，因此可以说the sketchy picture is based on accounts of...但是不能说scholars是建立在...的基础上。

E选项中using引导的现在分词短语是主动语态，表示scholars运用了这些成果，画出了那副画。逻辑就对了。
