英国贵族到底在干什么？

石林语法课程中有一句话，In England the well-dressed gentlemen of the eighteenth century protected his wig powdered by poking his head through a device that resembled the stocks.

语法点就是代词指代要一致，倒也简单。关键是画线部分的意思是什么呢？描述了一个怎样的过程呢？虽然不是很重要的事，可是不知道心里不舒服，哪位牛人给翻译一下。呵呵
