有的学校assistant professor 也可以带的. 我面试的一个学校系里好象只有一个professor, 一个 associate professor, 其他的都是assistant professor, 而其中有两个assistant professor 还在Admission Commitee里.
usually, associate professor has been in the tenure track while assistant professor is still fighting for the tenure. and most universities have policy that only tenure professors can be advisors of PhD students.
Different schools have different policies. But generally tenured professors can be the committee chair for your thesis. Untenured (assistant) professors can also be part of your thesis committee, just that they are seldom the committee chair, I think. Although they are "assistant" professors, some of them may have impressive publication records.
Usually, you wouldn't want to have adjunct or visiting professors in your committee. The former may not be active in research; the latter may not start long in the University.
but now i just have such problem, the professor's research background is very strong , but he is only the visiting professor of that university, i do not know how to do!!
Are you a current applicant who has received an offered or are you thinking of applying?
Either case, you can contact and check with him directly? Ask how long is he planning to stay in this Uni. Let him know your interest and see how he responses. Don't immediately ask him about doing your supervisor, etc - take in slow in your asking.
