但是D第一：up until recently不知道是什么用法，第二，分词放在了主谓之间，不是有名的夹心修饰歧异么？

如果A错就只能是因为时态错了，虽然我也选A，但是还是感觉用完成时比较合适一些

又看了一遍，感觉A更好一些，D改变了句子重心，shelter应该是做lead a nomadic existence的伴随状态。

the further examination tell me that the sentence should use present perfect.

But main point the author wants to express also changes because of the changes of the structure in this sentence.

Until recently（包括up until recently）后边一般用过去时，A后边现在分词修饰主句，表示伴随；
D 除了时态不对外，还改变了句子重心，更换了主要动词，而起up增加似乎有重复的感觉。分词从句并不是在两个名词之间所以倒没有夹心修饰的问题。
