Thank you for your message concerning one of the Sentence Correction questions in The Official Guide to the GMAT. You are correct in pointing out that there is some unclarity in the question you cite. Although the sentence is comprehensible, the phrasing is not as precise as it could be. The statement that "enzymes...are the organism's attempt" is an elliptical, but technically inexact, way of saying that the enzymes are the means that the organism uses in its attempt to metabolize chemical irritants. We will consider revising or replacing the question in any future editions of the Guide, and we appreciate your bringing the problem to our attention.
We would also like to make it clear that it is not ETS's position that examinees should pay attention only to the underlined portion of the sentence. The Sentence Correction question type is intended to measure an examinee's understanding of correct and effective expression in English, and in each case the task requires evaluating the whole sentence.
Again, thank you for taking the time to share your concern with us. We are always grateful to receive inquiries such as yours because they help us to improve the quality of our tests. |
