解释中关于(B)hrase carefully coordinating...illogically modifies the noun that immediately precedes it(book illustrations)

问:如果按102的理解,那79题establishing应该修饰Turkish sultan,怎么会修饰Athens?

请教分词的动作指代对象这类问题?

A well thought question, at least to me .

I was baffled by this question but then I found the following link:
http://www.bartleby.com/64/C001/021.html#DANGLINGMODI

Two rules in the above link seem to solve this puzzle.
Rule 1:  Avoid dangling modifier: participles, infinitive phrases, clauses, and prepositional
phrases that grammatically modify the noun or noun phrase next to them but
logically refer to a noun or noun phrase that has been displaced to another part
of the sentence or is absent altogether.
=> Question 102 violates Rule1.

Rule 2: Remember too that when you end a sentence with a modifying phrase that follows a
comma, the phrase always refers to the subject of the sentence, not the closest
noun. ( I think this rule is supplement to Rule 1.)
=> Rule 2 is applied to Question 79.

The above is my understanding.

Thought?

想澄清这一问题:

According to Rule 2, how to understand the following sentence:

He saw a woman, accompanied by two children, walking slowly down the road.

the question is who walked slowly down the road, -- he or woman?

基本理解你的意思了.从逻辑上说,book illustrations不能主动地coordinate,所以B是不对的

To xizzhu,

I have to admit that you got me.

Your sentence is an example from "Element of Styles", by which the author used to illustrate that the woman is correctly modified as the subject of the walking.

I am thinking whether accompanied by two children, makes a difference here since it modifies the woman thus the following participial.

Sorry, I meant "asking for" 高人指点, not refering to myself

yes, i just read "Element of Styles" this morning; then i thought there is something wrong in my understanding?

Rule 2:  Remember too that when you end a sentence with a modifying phrase that follows a comma, the phrase always refers to the subject of the sentence, not the closest noun. Thus, the sentence A few guests lingered near her, mumbling pleasantries   can only mean that the guests mumbled the pleasantries. She may have well been silent.

anyone could give an explanation?    thanks!
