some questions again, from 987

some questions again, from 987
The period when the great painted caves at Lascaux and Altamira were occupied by Upper Paleolithic people has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.

(A) has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are

(B) has been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine is

(C) have been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine is

(D) have been established by carbon-14 dating, but what is much more difficult to determine are(B)

(E) are established by carbon-14 dating, but that which is much more difficult to determine is

the answer is B and the explanation here is "what is-but" but I think the subject of the but sentence should be the reason and why not reasons here? for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals. they're all reasons right?

1.        The rise in the Commerce Department’s index of leading economic indicators suggest that the economy should continue its expansion into the coming months, but that the mixed performance of the index’s individual components indicates that economic growth will proceed at a more moderate pace than in the first quarter of this year.

(A) suggest that the economy should continue its expansion into the coming months, but that

(B) suggest that the economy is to continue expansion in the coming months, but

(C) suggests that the economy will continue its expanding in the coming months, but that

(D) suggests that the economy is continuing to expand into the coming months, but that(E)

(E) suggests that the economy will continue to expand in the coming months, but
Then key is E, so if we drop the that in C, will it be correct? could we use continue its expanding here?
1.        The speculative fever of the Roaring Twenties infected rich and poor alike; vast quantities of people were dangerously overextended, credit was absurdly easy to obtain, and most brokerage houses required only ten percent cash for stocks bought on “margin.”

(A) rich and poor alike; vast quantities of people were dangerously overextended

(B) both rich and poor alike; large amounts of people dangerously overextended themselves

(C) rich and poor alike; great numbers of people were dangerously overextended

(D) both rich and poor alike; vast amounts of people dangerously overextended themselves(C)

(E) both rich and poor; great quantities of people were dangerously overextended

The answer is E, but why B is wrong here if we change the amounts to numbers?

2.        The supply of oil being finite has become an economical and political consideration of the first magnitude for all modern industrial nations.

(A) The supply of oil being finite has become an economical

(B) The finite supply of oil has become an economical

(C) That the supply of oil is finite has become an economical

(D) The supply of oil being finite has become an economic(E)

(E) That the supply of oil is finite has become an economic

why D is wrong? How to use being? Answer is E

3.        The Supreme Court’s concern with legitimacy is not for the sake of the court but the nation to which it is responsible.

(A) but the nation to which it is responsible

(B) but for the sake of the nation to which it is responsible

(C) so much as the nation it is responsible to

(D) as the nation it is responsible to(B)

(E) but the nation
the answer is B why A is wrong? we couldn't drop "for the sake of" here?
1.        There is growing demand in the state for “initiative and referendum,” a procedure that allows voters to propose and pass laws, as well as to repeal them.

(A) allows voters to propose and pass laws, as well as to repeal them

(B) allows voters to propose, pass, and to repeal laws

(C) allows voters to propose, to pass, and repeal laws

(D) will allow the voter to propose, pass, as well as to repeal laws(A)

(E) will allow laws to be proposed, passed, as well as repealed by voters
answer is A, why E is wrong here?
a stupid question here its so stupid that I couldn't find an explanation from OG =)
1.        While larger banks can afford to maintain their own data-processing operations, many smaller regional and community banks are finding that the cost associated with upgrading data-processing equipment and with the development and maintenance of new products and technical staff are prohibitive.

(A) cost associated with

(B) costs associated with

(C) costs arising from

(D) cost of(B)

(E) costs of
for B why costs, not cost? The exp of OG is bc of are, but I guess the ~and~ decide we use are here. how it could decide cost????
1.        While some academicians believe that business ethics should be integrated into every business course, others say that students will take ethics seriously only if it would be taught as a separately required course.D

(A) only if it would be taught as a separately required course

(C) if it is taught only as a course required separately
