[转]Inputs for the placement of BC MSF
As promised. This is a fairly small sample of what the outgoing grads talked about, and what the incoming MSFs talked about. Interestingly enough, most of the people out this summer were from the US, and the incoming are asian.
Generally: the Americans didn't really know. Many had some local jobs lined up. This reinforces my idea that what they probably did was go to career services, career services said: oh, do this with your resume, try this with your job search and they said "Ummm, oooo-kay..." and shuffled off. The immigrants tend to be more ambitious, and a couple of the Europeans got NY jobs and a few are going home because they either have or are pretty close to getting good jobs there. The bigger question is the Chinese students. Most think they will go home because they do not want to deal with the US sponsorship and job search process and just dismiss it as too hard to deal with these days. Quite a few hinted they have friends and relatives in the bureaucracies at home, and will go home to pretty good jobs with leading organizations.
The more important thing I found out is that we have Alumni on wall st and elsewhere, and while it is not a huge network, it is a network of people perfectly willing to help out, and one that really seems to be connected to the school.
Conclusion: your mileage may vary, and your results will be in proportion to the efforts you put in. There are opportunities in the program and most people seem content to treat it like a second undergraduate degree where they just show up to class, do some work, and will leave once it's over. There is a small group of students who are grabbing all the opportunities (I am one, and I keep bumping into the rest at events and in special class regs). I think the people who try hard, take the initiative and are ready to do the time on WS will get there. There is certainly not much reason to stay in Boston: efinancialcareers.com has 2.3k active listings for London, 1k for NYC, and 20 (0 not k) for Boston. I expect to try my best to get a job in London (where I will need sponsorship) with an IB or a Hedge fund and I personally view the outlook as positive from where I am sitting right now. But ask me again in a year |
