 语法注释说DE的一个毛病就是not····but····不平行，其实我觉得not····but·····后面也不严格要求完全平行吧，请看下面例子：

39. According to scholars, the earliest writing was probably not a direct rendering of speech, but was more likely to begin as a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication, and only later merged with spoken language.

(A) was more likely to begin as

(B) more than likely began as

(C) more than likely beginning from

答案选B。这道题实际是想作was，began和merged的平行。虽然not在was后面，但是but部分所平行的可不是not后面的，而是从was就算起了。

59题考的是not...but... 并列结构 要求前后一致平行 或者意义上平行

D not+分词  but+ was+p.p

E not+分词  but+ by + n.

另外就算抛开这个也可以排除DE选项

D中 which引导从句  句子主谓宾齐定状补齐全，which不知道做什么

E中 campanies后面的定语从句 主句一般过去时，从句从意思上motivated by profil动作在先，然后才有主句was produced 应该用过去完成时，had been motivated 

39题

真正和was并列的是后面的merged 整个句子结构为 最早的writing或许不是 A，更多可能是作为B，and不久之后成了C

76题，consist没有被动语态，这里显然是was 和和consisted的平行。

39题，或许楼上没有明白我的意思，你所说的我在上面都说了，这正好是形式不平行的证据。如果非要保持形式上的平行，必须变成这样 not was probably  a direct rendering of speech，but more than likely began as ·····，这样才使not 和but后面的结构完全一致，但事实上这样unidiomatic,所以我觉得not but不能总是保持形式上的平行。

对于prep59题，我又想了一下。我认为我下面举出的反例也许不能反驳这道题的平行。因为下面各题中与do平行的那个be 后面都跟的是名词或者形容词，是系表结构不像59中的是被动语态。不知道这是不是就是必须要形式上平行的原因。
