不是很明白：
A中宾语从句 that一般不能省略（但也有省略的时候）

D中ethnicity后面紧跟又是一个ethnicity似乎觉得很拗口，也不好，难道就因为这个不好？？predict 。。。to 这个用法有问题吗？？

查了一下金山词霸：

查了韦氏字典，没有这个用法

朗文到现在还没下完，FAINT，一共665M，下了5个小时，才下了10M，等我下完，估计考完GMAT了！！！！

很抱歉, 没有办法编辑的更加清楚一些,就把我要说明的用括号表明吧, 还请见谅!199的正确答案是D, 可是返回去看题目,会发现在划线部分前面有一个there指代不明, 如果这样的问题出在选项里, ETS会毫不犹豫的之处这种代词指代型错误, 可是这里ETS却这么用, 原因在于正确答案D用in the eastern United States开头, 这样there就毫无疑问的指代eastern这个地区. 这样, 是不是跟楼主的问题很相似: ETS 认为在用代词指代一个名词, 只要两者位置能够尽可能的靠近,中间不牵涉歧意名词, 就要用代词,而不要将名词重述一次.

predict that 是习语，如果题目给出that,很有可能就选A了。：）
predict sth to do 目前还没有看到过这种用法，很可能错。
因为在it之前还有一个单数名词the scholarly wisdom ，担心出现代词it指代不清的问题，所以就认为把名词写出来会更好：）

突然想起一点：这个适用范围是不是应该是代词在前，被指代名词在后的情况？？

如果任何情况都适用，那不是就近指代了吗？？？

其实没有"就近指代"这条原则, 如果有的话, 就不会存在ETS反复强调的"代词指代造成歧异"的问题了. 对于这道题, 可以从contrary to..., ...前半句和后半句必须符合原句的目的: contrast, 怎样才能有contrast, 就是前后半句中有比较点, 如果这个比较点被消除或削弱了,都是不符合原文意思的.(这一点在OG中也有强调). 前半句的undermine与后半句的increasing形成鲜明的contrast, 对应的逻辑作用对象一个是it, 另一个是ethnicity. 无论如何,这里的it都要指代ethnicity. 如果指代前面的wisdom的话,就会把这种contrast破坏掉. 这样,代词与指代对象离得如此近,把it换成ethnicity就显得很冗赘了.
