一道曼哈顿cat的题目。
According to the National Science Foundation, in 2003 there were 198,113 female science and engineering graduate students, almost 42% of the graduate students in those fields, twice as much as 1981.

选double the figure for 1981请问这里的double是做什么词性呢？是类似twice的形容词吗？

恩，我也看到了这个解释，但是我觉得又不能直接把double等同于twice as much，这样就漏了一个as了。也许可以换成twice as much/many as吧。

这里的double做动词。double做动词时不表比较，就把它单纯地看做一个及物动词。

作动词应该用doubling做modifier吧

这个题目是一个非常老的题目，我记得几年前我就研究过。
首先回答double和twice的问题：

1. double 和 Twice 修饰逗号前面的名词时，用法是一致的：
We entertained 400 guests, twice the number we had originally expected.
We entertained 400 guests, double the number we had originally expected.

2. 除此以外，double还可以作动词，用doubling的形式修饰前面整个句子：
如经典例题：The number of people flying first class on domestic flights rose sharply in 1990, doubling the increase of the the previous year.

3. 这个是我自己记住的用法：
Ten women were elected to the Senate, double the number that were there twenty years ago.
这里double是指ten, 这句话是我记住的，换成twice应该是对的，欢迎大家讨论。
题目中应该就是这个用法

分析题目：
A. B. 是同样的错误，跟年份比较。
D. 的错误我是代词it 不知道指的是什么
E 是重复，that of 和‘s

亲想问下1和3有什么区别吗？1、3主句都有具体数字，形式也都是“，double".

AB错在1981少了个in……这样子就变成42%和1981比较了，如果加上in in 2013和in 1981 比较没问题啊
