关于GMATprep中语法的一道题（thus在什么时候后面更v-ing）

Many entomologists say that campaigns to eradicate the fire ant in the United States have failed because the chemicals that were used were effective only in wiping out the ant’s natural enemies, which made it easier for them to spread.
A. which made it easier for them
B. Which make it easier for it
C. thus making it easier for them
D. thus making it easier for the ant
E. thereby, it was made easier for the ant.
答案是d。我想问thus后面可以直接跟v-ing吗？为什么做了好几题（og），thus后面都是要有一个完整的话。还是说后面的making仅仅是伴随状态，与thus无关。我有点糊涂。

这道题应该用排除法，which不能指代前面整句话，只剩下cd
them指代不明，所以只剩下d

不好意思 e不是因为which才排除掉的，e选项的解释还是参考一下其他人吧～
