请教关于the number of 和the numbers of 的问题

看到有总结说the numbers of 肯定不对，没有这种说法，但是有例句是这样的： The numbers of each species were drastically reduced。
我记得在OG上也看到过the numbers of 的用法。
请问the numbers of 到底用法对不对呢？如果对的话，谓语用单数还是复数？

用复数
The numbers of each species were drastically reduced。
numbers是核心词，of each species是后置定语，与the number of 用法一样

可是我看到好多贴都说没有the numbers of 的说法。小晕呀

LZ，有的。。。。。
只是比较少见。。。。。
因为要求后面的名词可以分类考虑，所以number才是复数
这句话用numbers是因为each表示species>=2

manhattan上指出The numbers of dogs have fallen.是错的~The number of dogs has fallen是对的。。。。但是The grey oyster nearly vanished,but its numbers have rebounded.不是很理解为什么后一句要用复数numbers~

关于the numbers of，我也在曼哈顿上看到说是错误的，但又在og上看到过至少两次使用，很头痛，有牛人能指点一下迷津吗。。。
