[求助]试写了一篇,麻烦各位给参谋一下

新黄金的第一题

1. The following appeared as part of an annual report sent to stockholders by Olympic Foods, a processor of frozen foods.

“Over time, the costs of processing go down because as organizations learn how to do things better, they become more efficient. In color film processing, for example, the cost of a 3-by-5-inch print fell from 50 cents for five-day service in 1970 to 20 cents for one-day service in 1984. The same principle applies to the processing of food. And since Olympic Foods will soon celebrate its twenty-fifth birthday, we can expect that our long experience will enable us to minimize costs and thus maximize profits.”

The author of the statement basically claims that firms are learning to be more efficient in production and bringing cost of production down dramatically, therefore he or she expects that Olympic foods will follow the same commercial pattern with 25 years of experience. There are some assumptions that are falsely made in the claim, these assumptions or flaws can jeopardize the conclusion of the author.

First of all, the author states that it is that organizations learned how to do things better and become more efficient helps to lower the costs of processing. Although efficiency can certainly decrease costs, it is not the only reason, so this assumption is obviously questionable, there can be other causes that lead to a decrease in costs, for instance, the suppliers have discovered now sources that can provide the original material at the cheaper price, firms will benefit from the discount offered by their suppliers, even though production is not gaining more efficiency. Another example would be the employees who work for the organizations, they may be afraid of losing their jobs while the firm facing an economic downturn and need to lay off some of its employees, this would definitely improve the productivity of its employees, which also lead to a decrease of costs.

The author also shows a real life case trying to prove the conclusion he or she makes. It is very crucial that the author can give an example, however one firm’s experience can not really represent an industry. The costs of prints decreased over a time period, it does not support that the costs of other final products of the industry will decrease. Moreover, the color firm example is not representative for food industry, we can not conclude that the cost will go down because a firm in another industry has decreased its costs.

The last but not the least, how long the firm has operated is not a necessary condition for decreasing its costs, especially 25 years is not even a long period enough to prove that a firm will continue growing.

Therefore, I do not agree with the conclusion made by the author that given the assumptions and example, the costs will be minimized.
