Tom Bradley was mayor of Los Angeles from 1973 to 1993, an era when the city had transformed from a collection of suburban neighborhoods to the second-largest city in the United States

.

A.an era when the city had transformed.

B.an era during which the city was transformed.

C.an era that transformed it.

D.during which era the city transformed.

E.during which the city was transformed.

貌似答案是B。通过transform的形式排除了A,C和D，但是不清楚B前面的an era到底能不能省略（即E的形式）。求教。

不能。which在GMAT中的指代，尤其是非限定（逗号+which），是较为死板的，基本就进修饰逗号前的对象。
E选项中的which在GMAT语法中优先指代最近的1993，变成了during 1993而非原意想表达的from 1973 to 1993的二十年，逻辑意思发生改变。使用同位语an era很好的涵盖并指明了这一“from to 的二十年的时段”的含义。

不过我还有一个疑问，貌似看到过说gmat中非限制性定语从句的which是指代主句的主语，所以想确认下，到底which是就近指代，还是指代主句主语。

不过这里用了an era in which, 不是 an era during which; 是不是都可以

可以是可以，但是这一段时间你要用一个名词来表示出来，B的era就是这个作用
