想跟大家讨论OG16中的关于which修饰的两个句子~
30.In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Gizawere closed to visitors for cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone wascrystallizing and fungus was growing on the walls.
46.Over the next few years, increasing demands on the Chattahoochee River, whichflows into the Apalachicola River, could alter the saline content of ApalachicolaBay, which would rob the oysters there of their flavor, and to make them decrease in size, less distinctive, and less in demand.
之前我也一直觉得,30中的句子,which修饰的是tourists,所以是错的;46中which修饰的前面的名词bay,所以也是错的。
但是最近看了Ron关于which的课程,里面讲到了which的跳跃修饰。
例句(同样也是OG中的):55. Emily Dickinson’s letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson were written over aperiod beginning a few years before Susan’s marriage to Emily’s brother andending shortly before Emily’s death in 1886, outnumbering her letters to anyoneelse.
Ron在这里说:
What does “which”modify?
Here, “which”modifiers “letters to Susan Huntington Dickinson”.
“which” MAY refer to just a noun.
“which” MAY ALSO refer to “noun1 (+ prepphrase)”.
“which” is allowedto jump over prepositional phrases, if the context or grammar demandsthat it do so.
However, it can onlyjump over a prep phrase that actually MODIFIES THE INTENDED NOUN.
Ron给的例句是:
I took pictures ofmy dog, which areso adorable that they make everyone smile.
Because the verb is “are”, it cannot refer to “mydog”. This prep phrase is actually talking about pictures. So we can “jump” it.
现在重新看OG,就觉得OG30和46这两句话其实都符合Ron提到的which跳跃修饰的条件,所以我认为30题,which是跳跃修饰moisture的而不是tourists(这题og解释中并没有指出which存在修饰错误);46题which则是指代the saline content而不是bay(og解释说which modifier ambiguous)
希望听听大家的意见~讨论一下~
