Japan's abundant rainfall and the typically mild temperatures throughout most of the country have produced a lush vegetation cover and, despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils, it has made possible the raising of a variety of crops.

答案是C。总感觉是despite后面缺个主语。经常见despite引导条件从句，如果despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils是条件从句的话，后面缺个主语啊。请问，本题是despite的用法，在网络词典中，也没见过这么用的例句啊

题干就是2楼说的despite something的用法。。看题目的时候可以整个拿掉，通过and和前面的have对应起来

第一种理解：把despite看成整句话的转折

翻译成汉语：

日本大部地区充沛的雨量和典型的wild temperatures 蕴育了丰富的植被覆盖，尽管(despite)“山地地形和劣质土壤使种植多种作物成为了可能”(something)。

即尽管=despite
“山地地形和劣质土壤使种植多种作物成为了可能”=something

我很迷惑——整句话没有转折的意思，都是好的方面（植被丰茂、作物多样）；

第二种理解，把despite看成在后半句里转折，也就是"尽管是山地地形且土壤劣质，却使作物多样化成为了可能",这个something里面包含的主谓宾是什么？

'despite the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils'可看作插入成分，是'despite+名词'构成的介宾短语, 宾语（即despite something里面的something）就是the mountainous terrain and generally poor soils。

LS第二种理解是正确的。句子主干为：Japan's abundant rainfall and the typically mild temperatures have produced a lush vegetation cover and have made it possible to raise a variety of crops.
