Dear XX,
Thank you for sending that through. Your IELTS score would definitely qualify, and the fact that your undergraduate degree is a four-year degree is perfect. From the looks of your transcript, it appears you have most, if not all of the courses we require in your undergraduate degree. To give you a brief overview, in order to be considered for admission, applicants with undergrad degrees in Commerce, Business Administration or Management must have taken at least one International Business and one Finance course, and have knowledge in Organizational Behaviour, Marketing, Financial and Management Accounting, Entrepreneurship and other Business related fields.
Your question about career opportunities after completion of the MGB is a legitimate one, but we always tell students that whatever job they get depends largely on THEM, not just on the degree they hold. With the MGB degree, a wide range of career doors would be open to you. Keep in mind that the degree is still a “generalist” business degree, so you would not graduate being a highly expert specialist in one narrow area, such as marketing or finance, etc. Rather, graduates of the MGB would present themselves to potential employers in a way that shows their individual areas of specific strength and knowledge (i.e., from your previous degree) PLUS the key elements you have gained from the MGB degree. These would include things like a much more developed “global mindset” than normal business grads, a much better understanding of global business issues in general, a proven ability to work effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds and languages, international travel, study and work experience, etc.
These latter qualities – in addition to the actual academic learning and experience you gain during the MGB on projects and during the internship – are the things that will set you apart in the eyes of potential employers. Therefore, employers who value these qualities, and need them to make their businesses successful (i.e., companies that work globally, with customers, suppliers, employees, etc. who are diverse, global, etc.) are the ones who are going to be interested in MGB grads.
Of course, the individual grads also have to be smart, savvy, ambitious, intelligent, hardworking, good team players, have a great positive attitude, etc., etc., etc. These are all personal qualities that anyone must have if they want to develop a great career, and you don’t get these qualities from any particular degree or program. They are simply personality traits that one must have and/or develop over time and they are important elements that employers look for when they hire. So a lot of your career success is certainly up to you.
Now that I’ve finished my lecture (J), I’ll give you a bit more info. We have a staff person who works closely with the MGB students right from the beginning of the program to help them figure out what kind of internship opportunities they want and how to go about getting a good one. This is a process that is different for each student, but it is a very important first step. It is not uncommon for internships to turn into permanent jobs.
We have only had one MGB graduating class so far. Some of the students have not been heard from, so we don’t know what all of them are doing, however:
·One is working for Mazda European headquarters in Germany
·One is working for a software company in Germany
·One is working for L’Oreal in Canada
·One is working for a Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong
·One is working for a winery in Hong Kong
·One started his own online business in Canada
·One is working for a food services company in Canada
·One is working for KTM, the motorcycle manufacturer in Austria
·One is working for a finance company in Canada
In case you haven’t seen it yet, we are hosting a webinar on February 28, 2012 @ 3:00 p.m PST. If you are interested in attending and gathering some more information, you can RSVP to huangyt@uvic.cato receive the login instructions.
I hope this helps to answer your questions, and if anything else comes up, please do not hesitate to contact me!
