TWe116-people learn in different ways –second version

People learn in different ways. Some people learn by doing things; other people learn by reading about things; others learn by listening to people talk about things. Which of these methods of learning is best for you? Use specific examples to support your choice.

The issue of which is the best way to learn things, by reading, by listening or by doing things is an intricate question. Before presenting my view, I believe it is critical to look at the merits of both sides.

People who support theoretical learning suggest that learning by reading books or listening to lectures will enable people to gain sufficient theoretical knowledge, which provides an important foundation for actually doing things. Without such knowledge, people will have difficulty in getting a good job. In turn, they will have no opportunity to gain knowledge from practical learning. For instance, an accounting firm will recruit its employees who have an accounting major. It is hard to imagine that someone, who has no theoretical knowledge, can be hired by an accounting firm and do his work solely relying on knowledge learnt by practically doing things. If this is the case, instead of spending four years in university, most students will start to work after high school.

On the other hand, practical experience bestows its own benefits. Theoretical knowledge is intended to be put into practice, and practical learning is just an extension of theoretical learning. Even if people have sufficient theoretical knowledge, they cannot become a competent employee without practice. For example, a student of management accounting cannot become a successful accountant solely by reading books and listening to lectures. He must accumulate his own experience and learn from his own mistakes before becoming a chief financial officer. Just as it has been said” practice makes perfect”.

From what has been discussed above, we can say that different ways of learning are closely related, and one can not exist without the other. People should strike a careful balance when they mix theory study with practical experience. Theoretical learning helps people know what to do, while practical learning will tell them how to do things. A successful person should not only gain knowledge from reading books and listening to lectures, but also have the ability to apply such knowledge in a practical way.
