请教一道题目的句子结构

Verbal分册上一道题的题干：

The gyrfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.

其实也不是句子结构，就是我看不懂a close brush with extinction 是什么意思。with extinction是个词组吗？close在这里是什么意思？词典上查不到啊。。
求版上高手解答，thx

a close brush with extinction 是指濒临灭绝，have a close brush with death是九死一生的意思
