Ability most important for high school teachers:1. Encourage students to study 2. Give good advice 3. Recognize students who need help the most and provide help
There are various views concerning the most important missions of high school teachers. Admittedly, the three assignments-to motivate students on study, to offer them advice, and to spot the student who is in need of help are all crucial factors in the completion and success of the high school phase, I personally hold that, the ability to encourage students tostudy outweigh the other two.
To begin with, the ability of teachers toinspire students to study makes them closer to success in the entrance examination of universities. As everyone who has taken the exam knows, the exam is held once a year and competitions in this national exam are so fierce that high school students have to spare no effort to study in order to get a good score to enter tinto heir dream universities. Otherwise, students will have to prepare for another year until they are qualified to universities, which is undoubtedly a waste of time for the young. Nevertheless, countless cases of extra year of schooling happen every year. Therefore, since the focus of most high school students should be study, motivations from teachers will play an important role on their likelihood of success on this exam, thus reducing the time, or the opportunity cost of attending extra semesters.
In addition, teachers’ assistance of motivating them to study makes them realize the significance of study and help them get rid of distractions. One of the typical barriers placed in the way ofstudying, for the majority of high school students, is the distraction around them. High school students, aging between teenagers and early adults, generally experience their adolescence during high school. In other words, they are, onthe one hand, not mature enough to make the right decision to determine whatthey should do and what probably not, and on the other hand, still curious about many other new things that they have never seen or experienced. Facing with hundreds of appealing distractions, many find it hard to resist lures from outside. It makes sense that at this point they need someone who has the capability to drag them back to study, the main task of high school students.
In a nutshell, given the importance of thecore mission of high school students and the fact of the fierce competition in the entrance examination of universities, we apparently hope that teachers could do their best to provide help to motivate and encourage students onstudy.
