其实这里fewer of, more of就是单纯表示数量，取后面所接名词的subgroup。
换成原型后会好理解很多，

Ex1. FEW OF our customers are willing to go through a long and dreary questionnaire.
Ex2. MUCH OF my time has spent on attending trivialities with little significance.
Ex3. Diesel engines emit FEW OF the gases that have been implicated in global warming. (-- adapted from question No.1)
Ex4. Wild animals have MUCH OF a kind of fat thought to be good for cardiac health. (-- adapted from question No.2)

所以在第一个问题里，fewer of就是（以比较级的形式）取other gases的subgroup，如果去掉of变成fewer other gases就是错误的。逻辑上作者想要比较两种engines排出温室气体的多寡，比如DE(diesel engines)只排出50种温室气体的5种，而GE(gasoline engines)有10种。other在此处包括了除开carbon dioxide的其它49类气体，是一个确定的量，fewer other gases逻辑上就讲不通，只能为subgroup的比较。

同样道理，queston No.2中wild animals比起家养的牲畜含有某类更高价值的fat，a kind of fat...这里就作这类脂肪的概称，本身无法用much a certain fat来直接量化。

因此，这种pattern在逻辑上和语法上都是合理的，关键看作者想要表达什么，fewer A是A本身在变化，fewer of A表达subgroup在变化。
