45. “The most effective way for a businessperson to maximize profits over a long period of time is to follow the highest standards of ethics.”
As is commonly admitted by people all over the world,( It is universally acknowledged that) the final goal of the concern is to pursue profit. But over the issue of the means by which to achieve this goal there has long been controversial opinions. One is that only following the highest standards of ethic can earn the company maximize prize in the long run. Although ethic important in business management, I doubt if this saying can endure further inspection.
In the first place, the history told us that at the beginning of the business, only ethic can not help concern to make oneself known in the market. A person willing to earn profit through the means of running a business has to learn that without a good beginning, the future of the company is always in the mist. In order to gain the capital for further development, a company sometimes has to experience some dark times. It sounds like the history of the capitalism, which begins with fire and blood. However, without that dark time, without the capital calculated in that time, capitalism would never spread and develop in such a high speed all over the world.
Secondly, ethic is not everything in the business. In the theory of economic, there is a theory about the rule of the bucket, which implies that the ability of the bucket to hold water is determined by the shortest panel instead of the longest. In a company, it is the same. When you have already adopted the highest standards of ethic, the weakness of the company starts to shift to other aspects such as the management and the morale. In order to gain an overall advantage, what the businessperson has to keep in mind is the term "balance". There should never be a short panel which restricts the future of the concern.
Maybe someone will argue that following the standard of ethic is necessary after all. Yes, I admit that point; moreover, I agree that in the long run, keeping ethic in mind will win the company much esteem and success. However, that is not equal to say I consider the ethic the most important thing. We need the ethic to become more successful, but we should not stick to it all the time or take it too seriously. After all, the profit making is the most important thing. What's more, the highest standard is really hard to define.
To sum, the argument that the ethic is the most important thing in the business running is groundless and misleading. To a company, there is actually no most important thing, rather,to keep balance is the rule that every businessperson should keep in mind and follow. However, if your company is following a highest standard of ethic, then don't worry either, for what you have to do is only to find other shortcomings and change that. |
